Arsenal Women hold a historic record that no other English club has matched—they remain the only team from England to have won the UEFA Women’s Champions League. While Chelsea, Manchester City, and other top clubs have made strides in European football, none have been able to replicate Arsenal’s 2007 triumph.
Arsenal’s Historic Champions League Victory
In the 2006-07 season, Arsenal Women achieved what no other English side has been able to do—they won the UEFA Women’s Cup (now the UEFA Women’s Champions League). Under the management of Vic Akers, the Gunners went unbeaten in the competition and secured the trophy with a 1-0 aggregate victory over Umeå IK, one of the strongest teams in women’s football at the time.
What makes this triumph even more remarkable is that Arsenal won the final without conceding a single goal over both legs, proving their dominance on the European stage. Alex Scott scored the only goal of the final, etching her name in club history as the player who delivered Arsenal Women their first (and still only) Champions League title.
Since then, no English club has managed to win the competition, despite Chelsea and Manchester City reaching the later stages in recent years.
Chelsea’s European Struggles
Chelsea Women, under Emma Hayes, have transformed into a dominant force in English football, winning multiple Women’s Super League (WSL) titles. However, their European dream remains unfulfilled. The closest Chelsea has come to lifting the Women’s Champions League was in the 2020-21 season, when they reached the final. Unfortunately, they suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat to Barcelona, showing the gap between England’s best and Europe’s elite.
Despite Chelsea’s domestic dominance, Arsenal still hold bragging rights as England’s only Champions League-winning team. London is red, at least when it comes to European glory.
Arsenal: England’s Most Successful Women’s Team
Arsenal Women aren’t just about their Champions League success; they are the most decorated club in English women’s football history. With 52+ major trophies, they have consistently set the standard for excellence. Their trophy cabinet includes:
15 Women’s Super League (WSL) titles
14 FA Cups
10 League Cups
1 UEFA Women’s Champions League
This unmatched success cements Arsenal’s status as the most successful women’s club in England. While Chelsea and Manchester City continue to dominate in recent years, they still have a long way to go to match Arsenal’s legacy. Can Chelsea or City Break Arsenal’s European Record?
With Arsenal’s record still standing, the question remains: can Chelsea or Manchester City finally bring home a Champions League trophy for England? Chelsea, under new leadership following Emma Hayes’ departure, will continue to push for European success. Manchester City, with their young and talented squad, also pose a challenge.
However, as of now, Arsenal Women remain the queens of English football in Europe. Until another English club wins the Women’s Champions League, Arsenal fans can proudly say: London is still red!
