Former Brisbane Lions Player Troy Selwood Passes Away at 40
The AFL community is mourning the loss of former Brisbane Lions player Troy Selwood, who tragically passed away this morning at the age of 40.
Selwood played 75 games for the Lions between 2003 and 2010, primarily as a tagger, making a significant impact on the field. He was the brother of Geelong great Joel Selwood, a four-time premiership winner with the Cats, as well as Adam and Scott Selwood, who both played for West Coast.
Following his playing career, Selwood remained involved in football, working as a recruiter for Geelong and Collingwood before transitioning into a role at Geelong Grammar School, where he mentored young athletes as Head of Football and Sports Performance.
The Selwood family released a heartfelt statement expressing their grief.
We are heartbroken by the loss of our son, brother, and father, Troy. We will miss him more than words can express. Troy was a much-loved and loving member of our family. He brought joy and light to everyone who knew him.
He was a devoted son to Maree and Bryce, a supportive and caring brother to Adam, Joel, and Scott, and a doting father to his beautiful children, Tom and Sadie.
We will miss his bravery, humor, deep thinking, love, and compassion. Troy had a generosity of spirit, cared deeply about people, and always strived to improve the lives of others.
We are grateful to those who supported Troy throughout his life, and we know his many friends, teammates, and colleagues will miss him dearly.
Troy achieved so much in his life—from his days as a student to his AFL career, his work in recruiting young players, and his latest passion at Geelong Grammar School, where he made a lasting impact.
We know many will reach out to share their memories of Troy, and we appreciate your love and support.
During this difficult time, we ask for privacy as we process our devastating loss.”
The news of Selwood’s passing comes on the same day the AFL community also mourns Dale Tapping, the highly respected Essendon VFL coach, who lost his battle with blood cancer at the age of 59.
