Papal Intrigue and Spanish Musical Drama Dominate Bafta Race

The prestigious Bafta Film Awards are shaping up to be a thrilling contest this year, with two unexpected frontrunners emerging to captivate audiences and critics alike. Conclave, a gripping drama centered on the secretive, scheming world of Vatican politics, leads the pack with an impressive 12 nominations. Hot on its heels is Netflix’s Emilia Pérez, a bold Spanish-language musical that blends themes of transformation, identity, and redemption with vibrant storytelling and a stellar cast.

A Closer Look at the Contenders

Conclave dives into the machinations of a group of cardinals convening in Rome to elect a new Pope. The film has struck a chord with Bafta voters, earning nods across major categories, including Best Film, Best Director, and several acting categories. Its razor-sharp script, combined with powerhouse performances, has made it a force to be reckoned with this awards season.

On the other hand, Netflix’s Emilia Pérez is making history as a Spanish-language musical competing at this level. The film tells the extraordinary story of a feared Mexican cartel leader who leaves behind a life of crime to transition and begin anew as a transgender woman. This deeply personal narrative, paired with stunning musical numbers and heartfelt performances, has garnered wide acclaim. Selena Gomez, who takes on a pivotal role in the film, has been recognized with a Best Supporting Actress nomination.

Acting Categories Stir Excitement

The acting categories are filled with surprises this year. Cynthia Erivo and Demi Moore are among the top contenders for Best Actress, thanks to their powerful performances in Harlem Nightfall and Mirrored Life, respectively. Meanwhile, Adrien Brody and Timothée Chalamet lead the Best Actor race for their roles in The Vanishing Point and A Quiet Revolution.

However, notable absences have also sparked discussion. Denzel Washington, expected to shine for his role in Gladiator II, and Daniel Craig, praised for his performance in Queer, were both left off the shortlist. Conversely, Hugh Grant’s unexpected nomination for his chilling portrayal in the horror film Heretic and Saoirse Ronan’s nod for her emotional turn in The Outrun have delighted fans.

Supporting Roles and Surprises

Jamie Lee Curtis has secured a nomination in the Best Supporting Actress category for her role in The Last Showgirl. The film, which explores the life of an ageing Las Vegas performer, also starred Pamela Anderson in a lead role, but Anderson surprisingly failed to receive a nomination.

Other notable nominees include Saoirse Ronan, whose deeply personal portrayal of a woman struggling with addiction in The Outrun has drawn critical praise. In the Best Supporting Actor category, emerging talents and veteran stars are vying for the spotlight, with standout performances driving much of the excitement.

A Diverse and Unpredictable Year

The 2025 Bafta nominations highlight a broad range of genres, from political intrigue and musical drama to horror and emotional character studies. This diversity not only reflects the changing tastes of audiences but also marks a year where underrepresented voices and unconventional narratives are taking center stage.

With Conclave and Emilia Pérez leading the charge, the competition promises to be fierce. As the countdown to the awards night begins, all eyes are on who will take home the coveted trophies and what surprises the Bafta stage might hold.
