Sam Pittman Outlines Key Transfer Portal Targets for Razorbacks Ahead of 2025 Season

With the transfer portal in full swing, Arkansas Razorbacks head coach Sam Pittman is making clear moves to address critical areas of need following a 6-6 finish in the 2024 season. Speaking to the media, Pittman emphasized the importance of bolstering the offensive and defensive lines, while also noting areas of strength and opportunity as the Razorbacks prepare for another competitive run in 2025.

Targeting the Trenches

Arkansas’ 2024 season was marked by inconsistency in the trenches, and Pittman, a former offensive line coach, is keenly aware of the need to strengthen both sides of the ball. The offensive line, in particular, struggled to provide consistent protection and establish a dominant run game, which Pittman has identified as a top priority.

“We have to get bigger, stronger, and more consistent up front,” Pittman said. “The offensive line is the backbone of any team, and we’re going to be very aggressive in bringing in guys who can come in and compete right away.”

On the defensive side, the Razorbacks struggled to generate a consistent pass rush, a weakness that left their secondary exposed in critical moments. Pittman acknowledged that improving the defensive line’s depth and versatility is equally vital.

“The defensive line is an area where we need immediate help,” Pittman explained. “We need guys who can stop the run and get after the quarterback. That’s going to be a focus for us in the portal.”

Linebacker Group Remains a Strength

While the offensive and defensive lines present areas of concern, Pittman expressed confidence in the team’s linebacker corps. Led by a mix of seasoned veterans and emerging talent, the group has been a bright spot for the Razorbacks and provides a solid foundation heading into 2025.

“Our linebacker room is probably the best position group we have right now,” Pittman said. “We’re very confident in the guys we have there, and they’ve been consistent all season. It’s a position we feel really good about moving forward.”

Defensive Backfield Needs Reinforcement

Although the linebacker group is a strength, the Razorbacks’ secondary remains a work in progress. Pittman highlighted the need for immediate upgrades at cornerback and safety to improve the team’s pass defense, which struggled to contain explosive plays throughout the season.

“The defensive backs are an area where we have to get better,” Pittman admitted. “We’ll be looking for experienced players who can step in and make an impact right away. It’s all about finding the right fit and guys who can help us lock things down in the back end.”

Navigating the Transfer Portal

The transfer portal has become a critical tool for college football programs looking to address roster needs quickly, and Pittman is no stranger to its challenges and opportunities. With the portal brimming with talent, the Razorbacks are poised to make strategic additions that align with their long-term goals.

“We’re looking for players who fit our culture and can contribute immediately,” Pittman said. “It’s about finding the right balance between talent and character. We’re not just looking for short-term fixes; we want guys who can help us build something special here at Arkansas.”

Looking Ahead to 2025

As Pittman enters his sixth season at the helm, the Razorbacks are aiming to rebound from a .500 campaign and reestablish themselves as contenders in the SEC. With a renewed focus on strengthening the trenches and shoring up the secondary, Arkansas hopes to leverage the transfer portal to build a more complete and competitive roster.

“Our goal is to compete at the highest level, and we’re going to do everything we can to make that happen,” Pittman said. “The transfer portal is a big part of that process, and we’re excited about the opportunities it provides.”

With an eye on both immediate and long-term success, Pittman and his staff are working tirelessly to ensure the Razorbacks are ready to take the next step in 2025.
