Michigan football has bolstered its receiving corps with the commitment of Indiana transfer wide receiver Donaven McCulley. The news was confirmed on Friday evening by On3’s Pete Nakos. McCulley’s collegiate journey has been unique, starting at Indiana as a quarterback in 2021 before transitioning to wide receiver ahead of the 2022 season. Originally from Indianapolis, the 6-foot-5, 210-pound athlete was a four-star recruit in high school and one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in his class. His switch to receiver showcased his adaptability and willingness to contribute to the team in different ways.

As a freshman quarterback in 2021, McCulley appeared in six games and made four starts for the Hoosiers. During that stint, he recorded four total touchdowns—two passing and two rushing—while also throwing two interceptions. Although his performance at quarterback was limited, his athletic potential was evident.

In 2022, McCulley made the full transition to wide receiver and played in all 12 games for Indiana. In his first season at the new position, he caught 16 passes for 169 yards and a touchdown. Additionally, he added a rushing touchdown, demonstrating his ability to contribute in multiple ways on offense.

McCulley’s breakout year came in 2023 as a junior, where he became one of Indiana’s top offensive weapons. He hauled in 48 receptions for 644 yards and six touchdowns, establishing himself as a reliable target in the passing game. His performance earned him multiple accolades, including fourth-team All-Big Ten recognition from Phil Steele and honorable mention All-Big Ten honors from the conference’s coaches and media.

This past season, McCulley saw a more limited role, managing just two receptions for 21 yards and a touchdown. Despite the reduced production, his commitment to improving as a receiver and his proven track record from 2023 make him an intriguing addition to Michigan’s roster.
